Shakhtar coach praises ‘courage’ of players ahead of Real Madrid match

Igor Jovicevic has praised the “courage” of his Shakhtar Donetsk players for taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League while Russia launched a brutal wave of missile strikes targeting cities across Ukraine.

At least 11 people are reported to have been killed and many more injured on Monday, as Vladimir Putin accelerated his bombardment of Ukraine.

Putin said the strikes, which hit parks and commuter routes, were a response to an explosion on Saturday badly damaging the only bridge linking Russia with occupied Crimea.

Lionel Messi ruled out of PSG’s Champions League clash with Benfica

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League game against Benfica due to injury.

Messi, 35, is suffering from an issue in his calf, and will not be able to feature in tomorrow night’s game in Paris.

Presnel Kimpembe is also out as he is continuing his rehabilitation from injury. Nuno Mendes is dealing with a hamstring injury, while Renato Sanches is set to return to training with the rest of the first-team later this week.

Fikayo Tomori has said Chelsea did not face the “real AC Milan” during their Champions League fixture last week.

Tomori, 24, was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Milan’s Champions League tie against Chelsea at the San Siro on Tuesday and said the Serie A side are out to “redeem themselves”.

Chelsea dismantled AC Milan 3-0 last week at Stamford Bridge but Stefano Piolo’s side will be hoping to have regained confidence after a comfortable 2-0 victory against Juventus at the weekend.

Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has said he is “aware” of a video that shows him criticising his former Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta when he “still had a lot of bad feelings in me” — but says he now “wish(es) all my old guys well”.

Aubameyang, 33, left Arsenal in acrimonious circumstances last year to sign for Barcelona on a free transfer.

Son Heung-min dedicates Tottenham’s victory against Brighton to Gian Piero Ventrone

Son Heung-min has dedicated Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion to the club’s late fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone.

Ventrone died at the age of 61 last week and Spurs’ players wore warm-up t-shirts and black armbands to pay tribute to him ahead of their fixture against Brighton.

Speaking after the match, Son said that “it was really tough” to play Saturday’s Premier league game.

“Not only for me but every club member because he (Ventrone) was such a special man,” he said.

“To prepare for the game was incredibly hard but we did it for him and probably he’s up there looking down and he’ll be very proud of us. I think he was the biggest fan for us on Saturday.

Gabriel Martinelli in talks with Arsenal over contract extension

Gabriel Martinelli wants to stay at Arsenal and says he is speaking to the club about extending his contract.

The forward’s existing deal, signed in July 2020, runs until 2024, with the Emirates Stadium club holding an option to trigger an extension.

And the Brazilian followed up his dazzling display against Liverpool, a game which Arsenal won 3-2, by providing a positive update on his situation.

Asked whether he wanted to stay at Arsenal, he said: “Of course, I want to stay. We are talking. Let’s see what is going to happen.

“But I want to stay, of course.”

Brighton’s Enock Mwepu forced to retire due to heart condition

Brighton’s Enock Mwepu has been forced to retire after being diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition.

The 24-year-old was unwell while flying to join Zambia during the international break. He spent time in hospital in Mali and then underwent further cardiac tests after returning to Brighton.

The tests concluded Mwepu had a hereditary condition which manifests later in life.

West Brom dismiss Steve Bruce

West Bromwich Albion have parted company with manager Steve Bruce after eight months in charge.

West Brom are in the relegation zone in the Championship as they sit in 22nd place — their lowest league position in 20 years.

The West Midlands club have amassed 11 points from their opening 13 matches, most recently drawing 0-0 against Luton Town at the weekend.

FA looking into incident during Arsenal’s win over Liverpool

The Football Association are looking into an incident which occurred during Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The body has not confirmed which players were involved. Referee Michael Oliver ran to the touchline to speak to Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp during added-time after a fracas in the penalty area.

Jamal Musiala tests positive for COVID-19

Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Bundesliga club released a statement on Tuesday, which read: “Jamal Musiala has tested positive for COVID-19.

“The FC Bayern forward is doing well and is currently isolating at home.”

Bayern’s next fixture is in the Champions League against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday, for which the 19-year-old will now be unavailable.

PSG owners Qatar Sports Investment buy minority stake in Sporting Braga

Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) have acquired a minority stake in Portuguese side Sporting Braga.

QSI is the group that has also owned Paris Saint-Germain since 2011. In their 10-year custodianship, the Ligue 1 side have gone on to lift 29 trophies — over double in the club’s previous history. In 2012, QSI also acquired an ownership stake in Belgian top-flight club KAS Eupen.

It continues a growing trend in European football, where a combined 20 clubs from Italy’s Serie A, Ligue 1 in France and La Liga are part of multi-club models.
