Common Read Experience Hosts Critically Acclaimed Author | Binghamton News – Binghamton

The Common Read Experience, a program for first-year students designed to foster intellectual conversations and academia relationships, has evolved from a fall semester series into a year-long experience to enhance students’ exposure to vital societal topics. This includes bringing in speakers such as critically acclaimed author Safiya Noble.

During the talk, Noble, an internet studies scholar and author of Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, explored how digital media overlaps with racial, gender, cultural and technological issues. During a critical time where technology dominates society, Noble provided extensive insight on the ways that people are affected by the platforms they use daily.

This year, Common Read Experience organizers chose Kathy O’Neil’s book Weapons of Math Destruction because it explores how algorithms bolster pre-existing inequalities, a similar theme to that of Noble’s book.

Noble explained how search engine results spread false information by reinforcing racist and sexist stereotypes. For example, during a 2011 Google search of “Black girls,” the results included mainly pornographic and hypersexualized content. Noble argued that technology companies need to be held accountable for their algorithms that target marginalized groups and influence people’s perception of the world around them.

“I think this journey of studying the tech sector makes me realize that it will be harder than ever to create more fair societies because many of the technologies are ‘making life good,’ as Kathy O’Neil writes in her book,” said Noble. “They’re making life better for people who already have good lives and worse for people whose lives are already hard. What I’m trying to do with my work is uncover how that’s happening and try to intervene upon it.”

Noble spoke to a packed house of students who were a part of the Common Read program and other students who were impressed with her work.

“The fact that Noble brought in different aspects about how technology is impacting society, especially with search engines, was absolutely fascinating,” said Marco McClain, a sophomore majoring in sociology. “I knew that these things were racialized, but I didn’t know the extent to which they’ve been racialized. I think that it’s really important that these ideas are seen more and it made a huge impact on me.”

“The way in which Noble detailed how algorithms reinforce systemic racism was eye-opening and thought-provoking, and complemented this year’s Common Read Experience book,” said Kelli Smith, Common Read Experience committee member and assistant vice president for student success. “I’ll never look at a Google search in the same way and she inspired action for change.”

Noble said that people in every field must contend with algorithms, artificial intelligence and other predictive technologies and that she was happy to be at Binghamton University to broaden the conversation about the harms that come from them.

“The Common Read Experience began as a way to help students gain perspectives and engage in a dialogue on important social issues affecting the campus community and the nation at large,” said Sean Fenty, director of the Writing Initiative. “It has continued to help students engage in such issues and build community by establishing a common basis from which to discuss these issues, and by offering activities and events to help encourage that dialogue and build that community.”

Noble’s talk is only one of the events that the Common Read committee organized to encourage intellectual development and differing viewpoints.

“This past year, not only did the campus provide an opportunity for students to connect with their collegiate professors and other faculty to support engagement when they arrived, we provided additional programming efforts, including a movie screening of The Social Dilemma, followed by a discussion, and brought our keynote speaker, Noble, to campus,” said Peter Nardone, committee member and director of The Union. “What has been most rewarding is seeing not only students, but also faculty and staff participate in the entire experience of the Common Read, bringing the campus community together on an important topic.”

The Common Read Experience continues with The Annual Public Debates and Deliberation Challenge scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the UU-Mandela Room, when students will dispute prominent issues related to this year’s book, Weapons of Math Destruction.

FanDuel, Barstool Approved For Ohio Sports Betting – Gaming Today

Two more mobile operators have been approved to offer sports betting in Ohio ahead of the Buckeye State’s universal launch on Jan. 1. That brings the total number of approved mobile sportsbook operators to seven so far.

FanDuel and Barstool Sportsbook were approved as Ohio sports betting mobile operators by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) at a meeting today. FanDuel is partnered with Belterra Park racino in Cincinnati. Barstool is partnered with Hollywood Casino in Columbus.

Both operators have also been approved as retail operators for their mobile partners. Additionally, Barstool has been approved to operate retail sportsbooks at Dayton Raceway and Hollywood casinos in Toledo and Youngstown, bringing the total number of approved Ohio retail sportsbook operators to nine. 

Ohio approved its first five mobile sportsbook operators on Oct. 5. Those five operators were PointsBet, Caesars, Betfred, bet365, and SuperBook. It is uncertain how many more operators, or service providers, will be approved before launch.

Sportsbook Approval Conditional On Meeting Upcoming Deadlines

Approval of all sportsbooks and their facility partners is conditional. Potential licensees must submit their sports gaming employee applications, responsible gaming plans, facility plans, geolocation procedures, and house rules to the OCCC by Nov. 2 in order to launch on Jan. 1. 

Missing the Nov. 2 deadline will push their launch date to later next year. 

Additionally, all sports gaming facilities and sportsbooks must have their gaming equipment verified and ready to go no later than Dec. 2 if they hope to launch on New Year’s Day. 

OCCC staff were among hundreds of participants at the G2E Conference last week in Las Vegas, where companies that will drive the Ohio sports betting market shared their latest ideas.

Staying on track to meet the universal launch date was emphasized at today’s meeting by OCCC Chair June Taylor. 

“We are essentially seven and a half weeks away from what we are calling ‘the launch,’” Taylor said to operators. “So we ask that you continue to work with our team and ask questions, and just be authentic in your quest to get your paperwork and everything complete. Because we are genuine in what we’re doing in responding to you morning, night, weekends, and working as best as we can.” 

“The date is the date, the deadlines are the deadlines, and let’s continue to work hard to meet them and we’ll hope this operation is successful.” 

Sports Betting Kiosks and Suppliers Also Approved Ahead of Jan. 1 Launch

Sports betting kiosks will also go live in Ohio at the first of the year at hundreds of locations statewide, including supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and gas stations. The OCCC approved another 29 locations today. 

That brings the total number of approved kiosk hosts, so far, to 877. 

Before today, the OCCC had not approved any of the seven companies that will service the hundreds of sports betting kiosks around the state.  Four of those companies – Green Bear Gaming (UBet Ohio), Intralot, betIGG, and Skybox Sports Network – were finally granted approval this morning. 

Several new sports gaming suppliers were also approved today by the OCCC, bringing the total number of approved suppliers to 15. The suppliers provide software and other equipment for wagering from start to finish. Suppliers approved today include IGT, SimpleBet, IMG Arena, Skybox Sports, and Aristotle.

Protecting Data In The Metaverse: Do Avatars Dream Of Privacy? – JD Supra

SUMMARY

The metaverse will bring many benefits, but it is also likely to multiply and compound privacy issues, particularly given its global nature.

With the advent of the commercial internet in the 1990s, organizations were increasingly able to track users’ clicks and searches to gather information about their preferences, interests, and purchasing habits. Mobile technology not only added precise location tracking, it also enabled the integration of smartphones into virtually every life activity, giving organizations deeper insights into users’ identities.

The metaverse will take us much further down this path, enabling the tracking of human bodies and even thoughts, particularly as users develop deep relationships with digital avatars. Whether through virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) – which together are known as extended reality (XR) – the metaverse will increase the type and volume of data that organizations collect, as well as change how they process and share it across domains and borders. This will raise a host of privacy issues that we are only just beginning to appreciate.

Types and Volume of Data

In his recent book The Metaverse: And How it Will Revolutionize Everything, Matthew Ball defines the metaverse as:

“A massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence, and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments.”

Much of the activity that takes place in this universe depends on XR technologies that enable 3D experiences. Researchers estimate that XR applications produce one terabyte of data per hour, which is equivalent to 200,000 songs stored in a digital playlist. To convincingly render a scene, VR headsets track a dozen different types of movements at a rate of 90 times per second.^[1]

Whereas online companies currently observe browsing and search histories, operators in the metaverse will track our bodies themselves. Immersive technologies monitor human physiology, including eyeball motion and point of gaze, facial expression, voice, and heart rate. They also observe a wide range of physical actions, including head and body movements, haptics, gait, and posture. And they can track emotions through expression recognition technologies and neural activity using brain-computer interfaces.

Moreover, XR environments use audio, visual, and inertial sensors to detect the position of a user or device relative to its surroundings. This often involves collecting data about non-participants, passive bystanders who happen to be within range of a system’s sensors.

Operators that track physiological, mental, and biometric data are subject to laws governing the collection, use, and sharing of sensitive data and biometrics. That includes the General Data Protection Regulation in Europe; state privacy regulations in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia; and biometric privacy laws, such as Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act.

When the metaverse is used in work, education, or healthcare contexts, operators collecting data of this sort will be subject to sector-specific privacy laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

How Data is Processed

Organizations will process data using machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques to estimate or infer the identities, emotional states, and intentions of their users, as well as predict how they may behave in the future. Moreover, AIs and bots will actively participate in games as well as social media and other communication platforms, raising challenges related to trust. Deepfakes may raise particularly thorny issues.

In recent years, several states have advanced laws on automated decision making, and policymakers in the US, EU, and China are debating the regulation of AI. Under these laws, metaverse operators and participants will be subject to new layers of rules, including standards, trust marks, certification frameworks, and auditing schemes.

How Data is Shared Across Domains and Borders

One of the defining characteristics of the metaverse – what makes it “meta” – is interoperability. To support an environment that is persistent, live, synchronous, and interoperable, organizations need standards and frameworks for data sharing across domains and platforms.

As noted, many countries already have laws on data collection, use, and sharing, especially when it comes to personal data — and many new laws are being considered. But laws in different countries may conflict. And it can be very difficult or even impossible to determine which national laws apply when people come together from different locations around the world to interact in virtual environments.

Like the Internet, the metaverse doesn’t “reside” in a specific jurisdiction. Which country’s laws take precedence, for example, when a person who is in Japan meets another person who is in Brazil to interact in a virtual café owned by a US company that uses servers located in India?

The internet, which is a relatively static environment, already raises myriad questions on jurisdiction and choice of law. The metaverse – where avatars cruise in interconnected, always-on digital spaces without physical or logical boundaries – will multiply and compound them.

Enter the Blockchain

The hype surrounding the metaverse also relates to its technological relative, the blockchain. While conceptually separate, the metaverse and blockchain intersect where property issues arise. For example, avatars may dress up in skins that are tradeable as NFTs and portable across platforms and applications through users’ digital wallets. Moreover, Web3 champions support systems for decentralized “self-sovereign identity” in the metaverse, liberated from the control of major platforms and mediated by cryptology.

The blockchain, of course, has its own privacy frictions. For starters, it is designed to maximize transparency and actions taken on the blockchain are immutable. Anyone can see the history of every transaction that has taken place on a blockchain dating back to the chain’s launch. And individuals cannot technically enforce their right to privacy by deleting personal data stored on chain or hiding it from public view.

The metaverse presents exciting opportunities for reinvigorating online work, commerce, and play. At the same time, organizations designing products and services in this space will need to bake in laws and standards governing sensitive data and biometrics, AI and machine learning, cross platform data sharing, and blockchain applications. Whether through top-down government regulation or bottom-up privacy by design, the metaverse is an exciting new domain not just for gamers but also for lawyers and policymakers.

Bitcoin Price Will Hit $100K In 2023; Stocks, Crypto To See ‘bull Market’ – Tone Vays – Kitco NEWS

(Kitco News) – Bitcoin‘s price will reach $100,000 in 2023, and stocks and crypto will experience a “bull market” as European money flees to the United States, said Tone Vays, derivatives trader, crypto analyst, and conference organizer.

“I would be surprised if we’re not approaching that $100,000 [Bitcoin price] some time next year,” he said. “I think that there will be a lot of speculative money flowing into the equities market and into crypto markets.”

Vays claimed that “capital flows out of Europe” and into the United States could trigger Bitcoin‘s price increase. He also suggested that fear of missing out (FOMO) could motivate investors to purchase more Bitcoin.

“They missed their chance catching the low in 2018,” he said. “This is one more chance… if [investors] ever get an opportunity to buy Bitcoin again under $10,000, they will jump at it immediately.”

Vays spoke with Michelle Makori, Editor-in-Chief and Lead Anchor at Kitco News.

Bitcoin: A Unique Asset

Vays highlighted that Bitcoin cannot be confiscated and is “censorship resistant,” since the cryptocurrency is decentralized. He said that these unique attributes of Bitcoin would lead to more adoption.

“I see Bitcoin as the only decentralized cryptocurrency,” he said. “It is censorship resistant, and you can send it to anyone, anywhere.”

Vays pointed to recent examples of governments freezing or confiscating bank accounts for political reasons to argue that demand for Bitcoin will rise.

“We’re witnessing governments, central banks and regular banks freeze bank accounts,” he claimed. “This year alone, we’ve witnessed the West and the United States… confiscate wealth because people had a Russian passport… prior to that, Trudeau and Canada froze people’s bank accounts for a $20 donation for a political contribution… you can’t do that with Bitcoin.”

Bitcoin Price Support

Although Vays is forecasting a $100K price of Bitcoin, he said that the cryptocurrency could bottom to a $14,000 “support level” before reversing and reaching new highs. However, he cautioned that Bitcoin’s unpredictability makes determining a definite price support difficult.

“Because Bitcoin is so illiquid, it is a lot more difficult to identify a true support level,” he said. “There are no circuit breakers like we have in traditional markets, so whenever Bitcoin crashes, it tends to become very unpredictable… but I am looking at that $14,000 level.”

He added that he is “holding a cash position,” so that if Bitcoin drops to $14,000, he will buy more in anticipation of future gains.

Cirebon (ANTARA) – The Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Ministry has informed that the use of appropriate technology has led to villages looking at the future with more optimism.

“Technological innovation always acts as a spring, which makes countries, regions, and villages (advance) further, making the future (filled with) optimism,” the head of development and information at the ministry, Ivanovich Agusta, said at the “Nusantara Appropriate Technology Event” in Cirebon, West Java, on Wednesday.

Currently, villages have succeeded in changing the innovation diffusion curve, he noted. During the 2017–2018 period, the village innovation project managed to compile the names of more than 20 thousand innovation-producing villages, which account for 29 percent of villages in the country.

“The reality on the practice is definitely more than that,” he remarked.

Agusta said that villages have now succeeded in creating a vast opportunity for innovation by improving their innovation ecosystem.

He further noted that Wednesday’s event had brought inventors and the market together.

“Therefore, throughout the ‘Nusantara Appropriate Technology Event,’ a business meeting room will also be provided,” he said.

On the same occasion, Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Minister Abdul Halim Iskandar said that currently, there has been an increase in the use of appropriate technology in villages, both for agriculture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture.

Thus, the use of appropriate technology could increase production and generate added value for people who live in villages, he added.

Iskandar said he expects the use of appropriate technology to enable rural communities to do their jobs.

“Technology can facilitate and benefit the village community, as well as raise the awareness of villagers to use appropriate technology to create added value,” the minister added.

Are nonstick pans safe?

Nonstick pans have gotten a bad rap from those ugly rumors of toxicity, but the truth is, these are not the nonstick cookware sets you grew up hearing about. They are lightweight, affordable, convenient, and perfectly healthy (as long as you heed the manufacturer’s recommendations).

Nonstick cookware gets its signature slick, nonreactive surface from a synthetic coating like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or the FDA-approved polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Even if these chemical compounds don’t sound familiar, you’ve likely heard of their more popular brand name: Teflon. But before you start worrying about carcinogens and chemicals, it’s important to note that PFOAs and PTFEs are inert (a.k.a. they won’t react with chemicals inside or outside your body). Not only are these compounds safe to cook with, but also, let’s not forget why “Teflon” is practically synonymous with “durability.” However, that doesn’t mean your nonstick pans will last forever, even if some brands claim otherwise.

Papantoniou provided some insight on how often you should replace your nonstick pans: “You likely need to replace your nonstick pan every couple of years. Over time the nonstick coating starts to wear, and any time you see a nick or scratch on the surface, you’ll want to replace it because it compromises the integrity of the pan,” she said.

Some brands tout having the longest-lasting nonstick cookware, but she explained, “It’s less about the brand and more about the pan’s construction. Some have more layers than others, for example, which makes for a better nonstick pan.” Between shopping for a nonstick pan with the right materials and caring for it properly, you can get a good 5-10 years out of it before its time to shop around for a replacement.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your nonstick pan:

• You should never—ever—use nonstick cooking spray on a nonstick pan. It may seem counterintuitive, but these sprays gradually leave a film on the nonstick surface that is nearly impossible to remove, and therefore compromises the coating’s integrity over time.
• However, you still need to put oil, butter, or some kind of fat in a nonstick pan. (Trust us, it’s healthier in the long run if you do than if you don’t!) “You never want to heat a nonstick pan without anything in it, so using oil helps you not overheat it ultimately,” Papantoniou advised. “And in terms of cooking, it’s not needed per se, but it definitely makes things taste better.”
• Meanwhile, there is a spray you can use on your nonstick pan: Nonstick repair spray. To repair a nonstick coating and make your nonstick pan, well, nonstick again, this nifty spray should do the trick—just keep an eye out for any scratches.
• Unless otherwise permitted by the manufacturer, do not use metal utensils with your nonstick pan or put in the dishwasher. Metal utensils can of course cause scratches and scuffs that threaten the longevity of nonstick coatings, but harsh soaps, high pressure, and scalding temperatures can cause equally disastrous results.
• Some manufacturers may say it’s okay, but it’s best to avoid using nonstick pans over high heat to prevent damage or the release of harmful odors or chemicals. Instead, consider cooking with low to medium-low heat. (And in the event cooking on high heat is unavoidable, try not to do so for longer than 30 seconds.)
• When the time comes to send your nonstick pan off to pasture, Papantoniou had some advice for what you can do once you’ve determined it’s time to throw away your old, scratched, and ineffective nonstick pans: “Check your manufacturer’s instructions to see what the best disposal process is. Some metals are recyclable, but with the coatings, it can depend, so always check the manufacturer’s instructions.”

“I like a nonstick pan that has some heft to it, so it’ll sit on your burner without toppling, and ones that take a little bit longer to heat up, so you don’t risk getting to that 450º F temp fast, which is typically the maximum temperature recommended for using nonstick pans,” Papantoniou explained. “I like coatings that say they can be used with metal utensils, not necessarily because I want to use metal utensils, but because it’s a good indicator that they’re more durable. And cleanup is really important too—pans that have some grit to them, which makes them more durable, are actually harder to clean.”

When selecting a nonstick pan, construction is key. But there are a lot of factors to choose from, such as weight, materials, and design features. Pans with more heft can get you a good sear on a steak, but they’re not as easy to lift and flip. Meanwhile, more lightweight pans can be less durable and heat up too quickly.

Papantoniou had some pointers if you’re struggling to choose a nonstick pan: “I think the main thing to consider is, how are you going to use it? Are you looking for something to just make eggs in the morning, or are you looking to cook a whole meal for your family? Because that will determine the size—an 8-inch pan is good for a single portion of eggs and breakfast foods, whereas 10 inches is a good average size, and our test kitchen likes 12 inch pans for cooking in bigger batches. The second thing I would look for is material. Do you want a standard nonstick pan that lasts a little longer, or do you want a ceramic pan that can somewhat handle higher temperatures? And then the other thing is heft. If you’re looking for something lightweight, it’ll heat faster and it’s easier to handle, whereas if you go with something heavier, it’ll be more durable.”

An official announcement shared weeks ago confirmed that About Capital Management, an asset management firm based in Hong Kong had become the controlling shareholder of Huobi Global following a successful buyout deal. 

The buyout fee, which remains undisclosed, sees About Capital become Huobi’s largest shareholder. The asset management firm plans to fuel Huobi’s international brand promotion and business expansion. The first action of the owners would see a shakeup in the exchange’s corporate structure. Huobi also pointed out that the change in management doesn’t represent any switch in its core business operation and management structure. However, the exchange has confirmed that it plans to move its operating base from China.

With the Chinese government adopting a hardline stance against cryptocurrencies in the past few years, Huobi and About Capital believe this is a perfect time to move to a base with better, more welcoming crypto laws. 

Justin Sun Joins Huobi Advisory Board

As part of its governance overhaul, About Capital plans to build a global strategic advisory board led by leading industry figures to help steer Huobi in the right direction. 

This week, the company made its first strategic recruitment, bringing on crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun. Speaking to Bloomberg earlier this week, Sun confirmed that he had been asked to join Huobi’s advisory board, adding that he had also purchased millions of HT. Sun, who founded the TRON blockchain network, stressed that he had not yet acquired a stake in Huobi.

Campaign Countdown: Meet The Vt. Candidates For US House – WCAX

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The midterm election takes place in only three weeks and features the race for Vermont’s lone seat in Congress. With Representative Peter Welch seeking to replace Senator Patrick Leahy, Democrat Becca Balint and Republican Liam Madden are vying for the open seat.

Becca Balint is highly favored to win the U.S. House race, but that hasn’t stopped her from a busy campaign schedule trail her last-minute pitch to voters. Her signature message — a vote for experience.

“Have a strong record of service in the state Senate and I’m proud of the work that I have been able to do with my House counterparts and with the governor over the last few years during COVID,” Balint said.

The Vermont Senate President Pro Tem says getting up and getting out on the campaign trail is fueled by issues Vermonters are facing every day. “The housing crisis, the struggles to find child care, insurance for families around medical leave,” Balint said.

She is also pushing for improved access to mental health care, single-payer health care, treatment for the opioid epidemic, gun violence prevention, women’s reproductive rights, canceling student debt, and tackling climate change. Talking with voters, she also wants to secure the fabric of our democracy.

“They are very concerned with where we are headed as a democracy. and so to be somebody that is set on shoring up the democracy and voting rights and reproductive freedoms here in Vermont,” Balint said.

If elected, Balint says she plans to reach across the political aisle to fellow lawmakers on issues when possible.

And on her opponent, Liam Madden… “{He} has no experience passing any legislation that has impacted Vermonters,” Balint said. She also calls into question the self-described Independent’s position on the Republican ballot. “We don’t know what Liam is.”

Madden though, says he knows exactly what he is. “On principle, I am an Independent but on practicality, I need to participate in the two-party system to be relevant in it,” he said.

Madden says he chose the Republican Party because the pre-primary Democratic field was too crowded with candidates already raising large sums of money. He says his main platform is re-thinking democracy. “What we have is a political system that just tries to elevate one side over the other and I think that is just incredibly dysfunctional,” he said.

On the issues, Madden’s main priority is climate change. He works in the solar industry and pitches the need for all renewable resources. On abortion rights, he says access to reproductive health is critical to women’s dignity and supports legislation to protect a woman’s right to choose, but only to a certain point. “After a baby can live outside the womb independently — along with 86% of Americans — I believe that child has rights that should be protected.,” he said.

He also says he supports affordable, high-quality health care and an economy that works for Americans. His elevator pitch to voters — try something new. “I believe that we are capable of a profoundly more healthy way of doing politics and it’s not based on sending a new face to Washington over and over and wondering why the results continue to disappoint us,” Madden said.

There are four other names on the ballot in the U.S. House race. They include Ericka Redic, one of the Republican candidates who lost to Madden in the primary, who is now running as a Libertarian. She says she wants three things from the government — integrity, transparency, and accountability. Redic says the first issues she wants to take up are term limits, reining in spending, and getting rid of omnibus bills in Congress. She hopes to win support from true Republicans, saying that Madden is not one of them.

“I’ll have the GOP votes. The ones that I will lose are folks who don’t or aren’t engaged in the political process, that don’t know Liam is not a Republican. Or, there are people who unwisely believe a moderate can beat Becca — because again — we have already seen the moderate-Progressive matchup and the moderate lost,” Redic said.

Also on the ballot are Independents Matt Druzba from Burlington, Adam Ortiz from Rutland, and Luke Talbot from Brighton.

1. Meta forced to sell Giphy

Two and a half years after gulping down Giphy, Facebook’s parent company Meta is being forced to spit the gif-sharing company back up. The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has ruled that that Meta’s purchase of Giphy was anticompetitive — reaffirming an earlier decision from June. Meta spent $US400 on the deal back in 2020.

2. New iPads just dropped

Saving everyone the agony of a six-hour-long presentation (and a 3 am AEDT wakeup), Apple overnight quietly announced a colourful new 10th-generation iPad with a relocated selfie camera and a sixth-generation iPad Pro upgraded with the company’s M2 chip that debuted in MacBooks earlier this year. The 10th generation iPad now features the same “all-screen” design as the iPad Pro, the iPad Air and the iPad Mini. Apple also refreshed its TV range.

3. Vinomofo latest cyberattack victim

Wine dealer Vinomofo is the latest Australian company to be targeted by a cyberattack, with The Guardian reporting that names, dates of birth, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and genders of customers is at risk as a result. The report notes Vinomofo as having about 500,000 people on its books, but it’s not clear if all were exposed. Vinomofo in an email told customers it does not hold identity or financial data such as passports, driver’s licences or credit cards/bank details.

4. Telstra outage plagues calls

Yesterday, many Telstra customers were unable to make calls after an outage rendered its 4G services useless. The telco has been super scant on the detail of what happened, telling Gizmodo Australia the issue was fixed and services were progressively coming back online. Telstra also made the one (1) tweet about the outage, which gave no diagnosis or analysis of what the issue was exactly, or what caused it.

5. Robots made from frogs cells

The ABC is reporting that scientists overseas have developed self-powered robots that are made from living frog cells and replicated through artificial intelligence. A xenobot is basically a “micro-biological robot” and they measure about half a millimetre in length. Xenobots have many medical applications, but mainly they can help scientists to understand how cells function. This will help them learn more about various human diseases.

The Student Loan Forgiveness Application Is Official. 6 Things To Know. – The Washington Post

After weeks of waiting, student loan borrowers can now apply for President Biden’s program to receive up to $20,000 in debt cancellation.

Biden officially launched the application Monday after the Education Department opened the form over the weekend as part of a beta test, hoping to find and remedy any glitches on the site. Eight million people have applied to date, the president said. He estimates that the White House has received some 10,000 letters from borrowers praising one of his signature economic policies.

“My commitment was if elected president, I was going to make government work to deliver for the people. This rollout keeps that commitment,” Biden said at a press event. “Just as I am keeping my commitment to relieve student debt as borrowers recover from this economic crisis caused by the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic.”

Biden’s plan is to cancel as much as $10,000 in federal student loan debt for people earning less than $125,000 a year, or less than $250,000 for married couples. Those who received Pell Grants, federal aid for lower-income students, could see up to $20,000 forgiven.

The policy has ushered in a series of lawsuits from conservative groups and Republican-led states alleging the president overstepped his authority with mass cancellation. Biden rigorously defended the debt relief policy on Monday. “Republican members of Congress, Republican governors are trying to do everything they can to deny this relief even to their own constituents,” Biden said. “As soon as I announced my student debt plan, they started attacking it. Their outrage is wrong, and it is hypocritical.”

2. Ye to buy Parler, Parler breaches privacy

Overnight, news emerged that Kanye West was  buying Parler, the right-wing Twitter clone that bills itself as an “uncancelable free speech platform” and known for its lax moderation policies. The move comes a little more than a week after Instagram restricted West, who legally changed his name to Ye, on the platform and Twitter locked him out of his account. But how did Parler tell its loyalest users? By breaching their privacy via email with CC instead of BCC, of course.

3. Riot Games secures Aussie foothold

Riot Games, the publisher known for League of Legends and Valorant, is expanding its operations to Australia. The company has acquired Wargaming Sydney, previously part of the Wargaming family and working across online and mobile games like World of Tanks and World of Warships. The studio will now be known as Riot Sydney and will lend development support to ongoing Riot projects.

4. TikTok but 18+

TikTok has announced it’s updating its livestream rules to limit kids from going live and to allow streamers to only reach adults. TikTok will be raising the ‘live’ age limit to 18 from 16 and will block youngsters (under 16) from accessing Direct Messaging and you’ll now have to be 18 or older to send virtual gifts or access monetisation features on the platform. The changes will fall into place on November 23.

5. Apple spatial audio expands to Mercs

In a natural progression from the feature being on Apple-only devices, the iPhone maker is bringing spatial audio to Mercedes-Benz cars. Apple Music with Spatial Audio now comes fully integrated through the MBUX infotainment system in Mercedes-Maybach models. Spatial audio, if you’re not familiar, is designed to provide cinema-like sound, adding space, clarity and depth to music. It was previously enabled by default on Apple hardware supported by Dolby Atmos, such as iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods.

5G Network Rollout: Nokia, Ericsson Bag Jio’s $3-Bn Contracts – The Indian Express

Reliance Jio, the country’s largest telecom service provider, on Monday awarded long-term contracts to global gear makers Ericsson and Nokia to roll out its standalone 5G network.

Though the value of the contracts was not disclosed by the companies, industry estimates have pegged the total value around $3 billion, divided equally between the two vendors.

In August, Bharti Airtel had awarded similar contracts to Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung for rolling out its 5G network. The value is estimated to be similar.

Going ahead, Jio is likely to award one more contract to South Korean major Samsung, which has built its 4G network.

The developments conclusively show that Chinese vendors like Huawei are not going to be part of the country’s 5G network.

As per the contract, Ericsson will deploy its energy-efficient 5G radio access network products and solutions for Jio’s 5G network rollout, whereas Nokia will supply equipment such as base stations, high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antennas, and remote radio heads to support different spectrum bands, and network software.

Ericsson and Nokia would be paid upon achievement of certain milestones laid down by the telecom service provider. The structure of the contract involves building, operating and maintaining the network.

Jio’s core network is already up and running, built by the company itself. Once these radios are put on the towers, the 5G coverage will get enhanced.

Jio has already started beta trial of its 5G services in four cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi. It has said that its 5G services will be available on a pan-India basis by December 2023 at a total outlay of $2 trillion.

“Jio transformed the digital landscape in India with the launch of LTE (4G) services in 2016. We are confident that Jio’s 5G network will accelerate India’s digitalisation and will serve as the foundation for achieving our nation’s ‘Digital India’ vision,” Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, said.

Unlike its peers Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Jio is deploying its 5G network on standalone architecture, which it calls a ‘true 5G’ solution. In standalone 5G architecture, the network deployed is independent of the 4G network. According to experts, the standalone architecture does not have a developed ecosystem at present but every telco would have to switch to this architecture eventually to unleash the varied use cases of 5G and give an optimum experience of the new technology to the users.

According to Jio, its standalone 5G network deployment represents a major technology leap as it modernises the network infrastructure to deliver a transformative 5G experience to consumers and enterprises with advanced features.

For Ericsson and Nokia, India is one of the top markets in terms of business opportunity.

“India is building world-class digital infrastructure that will drive innovation, job creation and entrepreneurship across the country. We are happy to partner with Jio in those ambitions, through Ericsson 5G standalone connectivity, which will be a major catalyst in meeting those digital transformation goals across society, enterprise and industry,” Borje Ekholm, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ericsson, said.

“This (deal with Jio) is a significant win for Nokia in an important market and a new customer with one of the largest RAN (radio access network) footprints in the world. This ambitious project will introduce millions of people across India to premium 5G services, enabled by our industry-leading AirScale portfolio. We are proud that Reliance Jio has placed its trust in our technology and we look forward to a long and productive partnership with them,” Pekka Lundmark, president and CEO at Nokia, said.

Currently, only limited users are able to use 5G services as handset makers are yet to launch the required software updates on the 5G-enabled devices. Simultaneously, the telecom operators are working to extend the coverage of 5G network across the cities. FE
